General safety measures
I Abrasive products which are used improperly can be very dangerous.
- Always follow the instructions provided with abrasives and the machines that use them.
- Make sure the abrasive is suitable for the intended use.
- Check for any damage or defects of the abrasives before assembly.
- follow the correct procedures for handling and storing abrasive products.
Know the possible risks deriving from the use of abrasives and follow the precautions indicated for:
- Physical contact with the abrasive, considering the speed at which it is used.
- Accidents resulting from the abrasive breaking during use.
- Fragments of grinding, sparks, fumes and dust generated during processing.
- Noise
- Vibrations
Use only abrasive products that comply with the highest safety standards. The following EN standards provide essential safety requirements for related abrasive products.
- EN 13236 for super abrasives.
Never use a machine that is not in good operating condition or that has defective parts.
Employers must assess the risks of all processes in which abrasives are used to determine the appropriate protective measures needed. They must also ensure that their workers are properly trained to perform their duties.
PRECAUTIONS AGAINST POSSIBLE RISKS
Physical contact with abrasive products
- Always be very careful when using abrasive products. Tie your hair up and do not wear loose clothing, necklaces or jewelry.
- Avoid accidental starting of the machine before assembly or when replacing the abrasive. Isolate the machine from power if necessary.
- Never remove the protective covers installed on the machines. Make sure of they are not damaged and they are in the correct position before starting the machine.
- Always use suitable gloves and clothing if the workpiece is to be held by hand. The minimum recommended protection level for gloves is EN 388 category 2.
- After the machine has stopped, make sure that the abrasive product has stopped completely before leaving the machine unattended.
Accidents caused by the breakage of the abrasive product
- Always handle abrasives with great care, they can be damaged easily. Always examine all products for damage or defects before use.
- Store the abrasives in a dry and frost-free environment, without major temperature changes. Make sure they are adequately protected and arranged to avoid damage and deformation.
- Flexible abrasives must be stored at a temperature of 18-22 C and a relative humidity of 45-65% .
- Check any other safety warnings or information on the product or packaging:
- Never use and abrasive after the expiration date, when it is marked on the product. Observe the shelf life of the following products: Retinoid bonded abrasives and shellac 3 years; rubber products 5 years; vitrified products 10 years.
